After a marvelously fun night surfing (even though the surf was harsh) and camping (mmm… fire-cooked steak…) and star gazing as well, I slept in the car and woke up in the morning a bit stiff but none the worse. We had some fire-side coffee and hit the road. We had a long drive ahead.

A few hours into it we stopped in San Francisco just long enough to visit Arkay Workshop (http://www.arkayworkshop.com), a store a friend of mine started a few months ago. Rachel Kinney has awesome taste and I was happy to see her creation. It is everything I thought it would be. Devon bought a book. I bought a t-shirt. We checked out the local murals. We charged our phones. Then we hit the road again, driving over the Golden Gate Bridge going North.

My big disappointment was that by the time we reached the Redwood Forest, it was dark. Devon is a woodworker and loves trees, so I was bummed he couldn’t experience the full grandeur of the park during the day. Nevertheless, we pulled over long enough to find a huge tree, give it a hug and snap a photo to prove it happened.

We drove and drove and seventeen or so hours after we started we arrived at a oceanside house in Oregon where my ex-neighbor Kaitlyn is staying with a woman named Diana. They were kind enough to let us crash on their sofa bed at 2:30 a.m. When we awoke, Kaitlyn pulled up the shades for a perfect unobstructed view of the ocean waves crashing against the beach below. Perfect. Kaitlyn and Diana, thanks for sharing.

Kaitlyn, Devon and I went into the nearby town for breakfast and found a wonderful cafe that served us mimosas and yummy brunch food. Those who know me well will know how much a good brunch means to me. ;) Afterwards we wandered to the beach for an encounter with a swarm of seagulls being fed bread by a local. I love the expression on Kaitlyn’s face as the gulls get into a tizzy over the bread she gave them.

We soon parted ways with Kaitlyn as Devon and I headed to Portland, Oregon to explore the city. We went to a recommended neighborhood and wandered around. We saw a hostel with a rainwater recycling system. We sensed a lot of pride about having local stores and very little corporate presence. There were plenty of coffee shops and microbrews around. It was a good feel but something also felt a little strange about it. I suppose it’s not the impression we thought we would get based on what we had heard from 2nd hand sources.

We managed to track down a friend of mine from back in the day. Morgan, who met me when I had blue hair (those who knew me then know how long ago that was) called me one day to say he had been inspired to hop in his station wagon and head West.. He ended up in Portland doing animation work, so we managed to see him just long enough to say hello. Good times.

Another friend was on the list too. Devon and I looked up someone we knew from childhood… a girl our age who we lived with once upon a time when I was maybe nine or ten. Devon was even younger. He kept in touch with her and had her phone number so we stopped by to say hello to her to. Spontaneous visits on the opposite coast… It’s like another world when there’s that much distance, even if the language and currency are the same.

The end of the night led us to Seattle, WA, where we stayed with our cousins (first cousins once removed… Ryan’s mother and stepfather). Thanks Stephen and Susan for hosting us!

I’d like to take a moment to highlight the awesome work my cousin Ryan does shaping surfboards in Santa Barbara.  He has made quite a splash (I know, bad pun) in the surf world with his experimental boards.  With his company, Point Concept Surfboards, he’s a one man show and does it all himself from the shaping to fiberglass, art and logo design.  With another company, Timberline Surfboards, Ryan works with a woodworker to create boards using Paulownia, a fast-growing renewable timber product grown in Asia.  While I was in Santa Barbara I had the opportunity to snap a few photos of him at work while adding fiberglass to a board.

Visit him on his blog: http://www.pcprogress.blogspot.com/

He also has a bunch of videos on youtube… search for point concept surfboards

Change of Plans- Camping and Surfing in Big Sur March 18, 2009

Filed under: California — unrulyizme @ 3:44 pm

Devon and I had a plane to catch on Thursday, February 26, to head to Seattle for about a week. The thing was that Ryan and his friends, who we were fast becoming fond of, had a camping and surfing trip planned in Big Sur (ideal beautiful coast) for Friday through Sunday. It was very tempting. While tasting wine in the wonderful California sun, I got to thinking and speaking at the same time (i.e. drunk) and I suggested skipping the flight and renting a car to get to Seattle. Well, the idea stuck and soon Devon and I were searching for rentals. We thought we could get a car for about $35 a day. We’d seen a bunch of advertised specials and someone had called a service for us and said that’s what it cost. Well, although all the car lots had plenty of cars in them, for some reason when it was a one-way trip to Seattle, they were all sold out… some problem with driving the car over the border of California and leaving it there… Every place except Hertz, which charged more than twice as much. We didn’t think we could afford it and had thrown in the towel. That is, until we finally had to own up to the fact that we had to leave for the airport and were on our way when Devon said, “You know, I still have a reservation for $330…” F* it. We rented a car, went camping and Devon got to try surfing for the first time and swam in the Pacific Ocean. I got some beautiful photos and satisfied my craving for ocean and beach time since I had missed out in Thailand. It was a great decision.

(I have to pause and note that I’ve decided 25 is the perfect age to take a trip around the world because you are still young enough to get youth discounts on the trains in Europe but are also old enough to rent a car in the States. It was perfect timing for me.)

Santa Barbara March 17, 2009

Filed under: California — unrulyizme @ 9:30 pm

Arriving back in my home country was a strange feeling after such a journey. I was happy to be amongst people who spoke fluent English. I was relieved to be in a country where I knew and understood the laws and had a support system. I was not happy to be charged $1.06 in the airport for a cup of hot water (I can understand 15 cents for the cup… but $1.06? c’mon…) I missed the wonder and adventure of the places I had spent the last three weeks in. Fortunately for me, my trip wasn’t over yet. Far from it.

I caught a shuttle from LAX to Santa Barbara where I was picked up by my cousin Ryan and my brother Devon. Ryan lives in Santa Barbara and makes surfboards. Devon was there because I convinced him he should meet me on the West coast and I booked his ticket. Devon had arrived several days prior.

My sense of time was completely distorted. I had left Hong Kong at 4:30 p.m. on a Monday afternoon, been on a plane for 12 hours and arrived at 12:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon in Los Angeles. That means I had become a time traveler and had arrived four hours before I left! A night or two before my flight I had watched the movie “Next” with Nicholas Cage in it (actually not terrible) in which he can see two minutes (or more) into the future and then change his present action to live the desired outcome. All that thinking about time added to my jet lag and thoroughly confused me. Long story short, I arrived on the day before I thought I was going to. That was great news because then I had an extra day in Santa Barbara.

First things first. The three of us went to the favorite local hangout and ordered amazing clam chowder in a bread bowl and wonderfully strong beer. Was it really strong or was I just jet lagged? I can’t be sure, but I was tipsy. People pay for that kind of feeling- elated, sleep deprived giddiness. I was happy to be hanging out in California with my brother and cousin. I slept very very well that night.

The next day we had an epic adventure planned- wine tasting. Why not? We piled into a car with Ryan’s friends Trish and Htang (I’m sorry to both of you if I have butchered the spellings of your names). Trish insisted on five wine tastings which meant we were thoroughly intoxicated by the end of the day, but the wine was good, the sun was wonderful and Htang was kind enough to be a designated D. I’d have to say I was pretty close to bliss. It was “epic,” dude.

Over the next two days we climbed to the top of town hall for a panoramic view of Santa Barbara, walked the main strip and spent some time with Ryan’s friends who have a new start-up business called Midnight Muncheez. It’s basically a convenience store with a delivery service attached. They were in the process of painting a sign on the front and murals on the inside. It definitely had a surf/head shop twist. The guys were exhausted but still a bit excited by the thrill of doing their own thing. I bought a mint ice cream sandwich to support their cause. (No, sorry I don’t have a picture of the mint ice cream sandwich… lol.)
